This drawing‘s title is “Man”.
I did it back in 2014. At the time I didn’t understand my process.
Luckily I kept a few pictures which helps me to share today how this works for me.
I wish this article to inspire you to try !
Here I painted a background in watercolour. I don’t remember if I drew the lines before or after. It doesn’t matter actually. If you would like to try something similar just go with the flow of how it feels for you. In my own practice I have learnt not to follow “recipes”. I learnt how to listen to my creative impulses and to not question them.
The process consists in holding a pencil in both hands, the dominant and the non dominant one.
Take a deep breath, close your eyes.
Start scribbling when you are ready and stop when you feel like to.
If you don’t feel secure, try to acknowledge the feeling and leave it aside.
Then visualise the white page in your mind. Compare it to an open space where to play.
Start drawing lines blind folded.
Empty my mind.
Play.
At this stage you don’t want to draw anything in particular.
You are doing some marks on paper.
There is no expected result to have.
When you are ready, open my eyes, and look.
Turn the page round, in all four directions till you can “see” something.
Choose the image that you prefer.
In this practice you make your own rule.
Either you wish to use all the drawn lines, or just a few.
You can outline the lines that you like, and tone down those that you don’t use. Or you may decide to hide those you don’t use, by rubbing them, or painting over them for instance.
Here I have used charcoal to make the lines stand out. I could see a face.
At this stage the imagery is very abstract and it is a subconscious projection which we need to trust. It is entirely up to us whether we want to explore it or not. Listen to how it feels for you.
If you want to, the last stage consists in bringing tone to create the 3D.
We may face some technical difficulties, but it is a very natural way of learning.
At the time, I didn’t bother about the right proportions of a face. I just wanted to see on my page the face that I could see in my mind !
The more you do, the easier it becomes :)
