Touch … Feel … Create
When we draw or paint there is usually the expectation to be good at observing the subject.
Yes, you need Observation skills.
But not only.
An Artist creates with his/her five senses:
feel -touch -sight - taste -smell
It is so easy to focus on improving Observation Skills only, but the sense of touch helps to experience 3D from a new perspective.
Molding clay helps to dig in a personal imagery. It is a fantastic medium to help access ideas and imagination that you would not even expect to have. “Touching” is here the main sense used in the process where 3D is experienced “for real”.
Here are below a few examples of faces created during workshops. Just notice how different they are: expressions, shapes, and bone structure. These portraits all come from the imagination.
Now, try to see how the light enhances shapes of the face in clay. The dark tone naturally settle in the depth of the eye sockets, hair line, neck, nose, lips … If you struggle to draw portraits, clay offers a fantastic way to experience and understand lights and darks. This is why we extended the clay art making into the drawing process.
Results speak by themselves.
Try to match the four drawings below to its clay sculpture !
