What are your New Year’s resolutions ?
I was delighted to be invited by Sophie Sutton on BBC Radio Kent for her mid-morning show yesterday to discuss about how to start a new hobby as part of new resolutions for 2021.
The podcast is available till the end of January 2021 - My interview starts at 2h14 :

As we are optimistic for a better year, we also know that it may take some time to be back to normal. Hence you may think of adding new resolutions to your To Do List such as learning a new skill ? Sophie’s suggestions are starting art lessons, learning how to play the guitar, or even upcycling for example.
Starting something new is the opportunity to challenge yourself on unknown paths. The only thing you need is Curiosity. The first steps might be the most difficult ones, but very quickly you will feel rewarded of your efforts.
Learn what to look at, and where to start from.
Motivation is important, so I usually help my students to define their own project which can be, learning how to sketch or paint when they are on holidays for instance. But you may want to learn how to illustrate a book you are writing, or you may want to re-connect with a former passion. Any reason is good, and I offer a bespoke help.
Every step is necessary to move forward, as every drawing/painting is, in your learning experience. It is a journey and exploring the white page with confidence and at your own pace is essential. The final result is more like a surprise than an expectation. So, Patience will be your best friend.
Everyone can learn, you don’t need to be “gifted”. And you can learn at any age.
Learning to draw or paint can also help for the following :
-
concentration
-
relaxation
-
observation
-
body awareness
-
connection with the environment
-
hand dexterity
-
coordination
